This year, in the garden, I planted some of the usual... string beans, tomatoes, peppers. And I did a few things that are unusual for me, too: I planted an eggplant in a pot, which I'm leaving on my patio - because it's actually way sunnier than the garden - and I planted a few pea plants.
I didn't plant the type of peas with the edible pods, because no one in the family ever wanted to eat the pods. I planted the regular kind with the peas that you shell, because I figured we'd eat them better.
So yesterday was my first pea harvest. I got enough peas for each of us to eat about two tablespoons of peas. But they were DELICIOUS... some of the best peas ever!
I think it's been a good spring for growing peas because it's been rainy and cool for so long. Now, I'm hoping I'll get another harvest, from these same plants -- but it's not so sure that I will. I'm going to plant more of the peas for a fall harvest, too.
For sure, if I had to grow the food for my family to eat, I would have to try harder. It was just a nibble, barely enough to make a dent in one meal.

I planted peas too, perfect weather for them. However, If I get one pea I will be lucky. Something ate all of the plants. However, one wasn't eaten so much that it couldn't recover and it looks like it will die before it gets big enough to produce a pea.

I want some eggplant....
my Basil is kicking butt and my topsy turvey tomato plant is growing like a week...but I saw a rabbit eyeing it last week and laughing at us....He said...I can jump up that high with one paw tied behing my back...you humans are so funny trying to keep me from your vegetables...
two tablespoons of peas is not nearly enough!
maybe for your second crop, you could plant blueberry muffins.
Hi Sue, I'm stil in Holland, but everything is slowing down now, and i am now going to read all about your backpack adventure. It's a good to see you, Jozien
Mom, You are the winner of the ETERNAL OPTIMIST award, for your efforts in the garden!!! At least you are getting a lot of exercise and fresh air!
Beth - I think I'll have to get a few of those topsy turvy planters and give them to my mom... I gave her one for Mothers day, but that's not enough. I'll give you some eggplant if I get any!
Sera - The 2 tablespoons of peas was rather sad, but very tasty! I've got some blackberry bushes too, maybe blackberry muffins? Never tried that before.
Jozien - I hope all is well with you, and I'm looking forward to catching up soon...
Don't rush out and get more topsy turvy planters. Unless I hang them from the roof top something is going to eat them. Like Beth said the animals are just waiting until I have a tomato then they will come up on the porch and I know they can reach it. I planted a hanging strawberry and they got that. I have another tomato in a big pot and put a fence around it on the deck. I still don't expect to get a tomato. They will find a way.
